I always see this photo reversed not sure why.
The original photograph is the other way around.

alright then, heres my trivial pursuit question:
which way was she facing when the photo was taken?

< -- that way. (You can tell by the casting shadow formed on the prop)

But the magazine scan shows that it was the other way, so I can assume based of desktop publishing rules that they switched it so to flow with the direction of the page, as we read things left to right.

I'm not an expert, I'm just guessing based on prior photography and magazine publishing experience.
Certain magazines or newspapers will crop photos and reverse them depending on what side of the page the photo is on to in keep with the page layout.

I doesn't really matter which way it was, I was just pointing out that I have noticed this particular photo has been shown both ways on different sites.

Off-topic:
I personally chose to edited the photo so that it is 1440 x 900 and have her facing the left.
Seeing as I'm using Windows 7, I created several colour changes so it cycles through them pretty seamlessly.
